Warm.

April 1, 2019 by Exangel

by Jeff Schiff.

Sated moon
what do I know
but that we must aim all

at making this
the right life—
and therefore pause

often
to conjure you
familiar corn and flax

shy
an hour’s drive
west of where I stand

How many in my city though
plummet their loss
from an easy ledge

never lulled by
plum compote
cast beneath nightlight

their ill-nurtured reveries
giving way to asphalt
or

more likely
poured
concrete

Where I Live Some of the Time.

April 1, 2019 by Exangel

by Barry Vitcov. The night sky is my home Its emptiness tucked between supernovas and black holes Welcoming me into imagined places I’m pedaling my space bike A modified road trike Across the universe Counting handfuls of stars Fluffy cotton candy bars Woven into fanciful shapes When a mermaid catches my eye Like an interstellar […]

Speaking of Potatoes.

April 1, 2019 by Exangel

I know we weren’t but we should have been, okay? I was in the market the other day, and there was this adorable little net bag of tiny, multicolored potatoes, roughly the size of marbles. Since Alex’s ur-food is potatoes, I knew these would thrill him, and indeed, when I brought them out last night […]

Rough Astronomy.

April 1, 2019 by Exangel

by Chris Farago. What rough astronomy we build for ourselves on these cloudy nights! There is a sky behind that wall; We have seen it, let it mingle in our minds With the hyacinth, the honeysuckle, “Take Five” tapped out on Orion’s belt. Everything together; the universe, together; The universe, ours for the taking, All […]

Giddy Ditty

April 1, 2019 by Exangel

by Marissa Bell Toffoli. Bubbles on the wind catch the sunlight. Her feet barely touch the ground, blur. Flight of laughter down the block. I can hardly bear to watch her landing miracles. One, two, three. Stop. Step. Lavender, mint, daffodils, and dandelions. Run, jump, clap. Sunburst bubble pop. Spin. Home again, home again, day […]

Getting Conscious. We hope.

December 31, 2018 by Exangel

What triggers consciousness? That’s the question on my mind just now. I’ve been following the whole debate about Artificial Intelligence, about whether or not it is heading for a conscious state—and whether that consciousness will make it a threat to humankind. So when I think on it, I want to take it back a step. […]

The Dictator Confronted by the Magus.

December 31, 2018 by Exangel

by Ron Singer. “How the hell did you get in here?” The Dictator groped for the buzzer beneath his desk, almost pressing the red nuclear button, instead.             “”Don’t bother,’ said the intruder, a tall man dressed in the gray hooded robe of a Dominican friar. ”It isn’t working. Besides, I’m not here to harm […]

Pasta Hacks.

December 31, 2018 by Exangel

Pasta is my friend. All kinds. All shapes. Even whole wheat. Even gluten free. Any kind of dried noodle is a wonderful thing to discover in my kitchen when I fear, hungry and worried, that the cupboard is bare. I wish for everyone that they should have a package or two of it stored somewhere, […]

Triggers.

December 31, 2018 by Exangel

by Benjamin White. Triggers.                                     All the senses are triggers, Recalling the pastTo let emotions resurfaceAnd subsist on thoughts, And the consciousness Of nostalgic possibilities Lost and goneSinking in the depthsOf time trying to – Wanting to – Enrich the experiencesThat experienced enrichment – Embraced,Even as they drown. Without memoryThere can be no love, So […]

The Great Maestro Takes on Gage.

December 31, 2018 by Exangel

by Jim Meirose. So. You want to learn. To play. Piano Play. Learn to. Play. Piano play no. Learn. To play piano play. No. Learn to play. Play what? Piano play. No. But. Learn to play piano for people play for.  No. Learn to. No. Learn to play. Play what? No just play. Wrong answer. […]

That cult classic pirate/sci fi mash up GREENBEARD, by Richard James Bentley, is now a rollicking audiobook, available from Audible.com. Narrated and acted by Colby Elliott of Last Word Audio, you’ll be overwhelmed by the riches and hilarity within.

“Captain Sylvestre de Greybagges is your typical seventeenth-century Cambridge-educated lawyer turned Caribbean pirate, as comfortable debating the virtues of William Shakespeare, Isaac Newton, and compound interest as he is wielding a cutlass, needling archrival Henry Morgan, and parsing rum-soaked gossip for his next target. When a pepper monger’s loose tongue lets out a rumor about a fleet loaded with silver, the Captain sets sail only to find himself in a close encounter of a very different kind.

After escaping with his sanity barely intact and his beard transformed an alarming bright green, Greybagges rallies The Ark de Triomphe crew for a revenge-fueled, thrill-a-minute adventure to the ends of the earth and beyond.

This frolicsome tale of skullduggery, jiggery-pokery, and chicanery upon Ye High Seas is brimming with hilarious puns, masterful historical allusions, and nonstop literary hijinks. Including sly references to Thomas Pynchon, Treasure Island, 1940s cinema, and notable historical figures, this mélange of delights will captivate readers with its rollicking adventure, rich descriptions of food and fashion, and learned asides into scientific, philosophical, and colonial history.”

Newport Public Library hosted a three part Zoom series on Visionary Fiction, led by Tod.

And we love them for it, too.

The first discussion was a lively blast. You can watch it here. The second, Looking Back to Look Forward can be seen here.

The third was the best of all. Visions of the Future, with a cast of characters including poets, audiobook artists, historians, Starhawk, and Mary Shelley. Among others. Link is here.

SNOTTY SAVES THE DAY is now an audiobook, narrated by Last Word Audio’s mellifluous Colby Elliott. It launched May 10th, but for a limited time, you can listen for free with an Audible trial membership. So what are you waiting for? Start listening to the wonders of how Arcadia was born from the worst section of the worst neighborhood in the worst empire of all the worlds since the universe began.

If you love audio books, don’t miss the new release of REPORT TO MEGALOPOLIS, by Tod Davies, narrated by Colby Elliott of Last Word Audio. The tortured Aspern Grayling tries to rise above the truth of his own story, fighting with reality every step of the way, and Colby’s voice is the perfect match for our modern day Dr. Frankenstein.

Tod on the Importance of Visionary Fiction

Check out this video of “Beyond Utopia: The Importance of Fantasy,” Tod’s recent talk at the tenth World-Ecology Research Network Conference, June 2019, in San Francisco. She covers everything from Wind in the Willows to the work of Kim Stanley Robinson, with a look at The History of Arcadia along the way. As usual, she’s going on about how visionary fiction has an important place in the formation of a world we want and need to have.
