poem

A false translation of every poem I’ve ever written.

October 1, 2023 by Exangel

by Chris Farago.

The cat smiled, seeing a sparrow in flight;
the sparrow would be wounded, soon,
and in his grasp. The sparrow smiled,
also, for he would be in the grasp of the cat,
fulfilling a thousand million prophecies
told by prophets born long before them.
The sparrow winked as he dove groundward. The cat smiled, again.

Compromise with the Air.

October 1, 2023 by Exangel

by Marissa Bell Toffoli. The edge of the world glows in the evening, enchants city buildings. Take in the view from on high. Gossamer bridges span dappled bay water, the skyline floats above foundations. You stand like a lighthouse, rigid with responsibility, signaling endlessly from your precipice. Watch as a crow swoops through the scene. […]

San Diego Zoo.

October 1, 2023 by Exangel

by James Croal Jackson. after our red leash became frantic unsure of what grip the wilderness had or which eyeline to focus on oh aquamarine jewels oh black-silk storks name the artist who decided traffic was a logjam in their brain all you must do (golden hour brown on the frizz of your hair) is […]

the blooming meadows.

October 1, 2023 by Exangel

by Jakub Paczesniak. (translated by Charles S. Kraszewski) the blooming meadows spread wide just outside the door a stream of honey-coloured light fell from the sky the trees turned their green faces in our direction the valley filled with figures of air and we went along thinking that we’re going along alone

Those Wild Animals Our Dreams.

October 1, 2023 by Exangel

by JW James. moving slowly through the forests maybe you only get a glimpse the fox of nowhere the foxes of nothing your sensual psyche stretches across the landscape you are a deep hidden lake of everything when you drop down when you lift the skies there is no turning back and nightblack-feathered raven blocks […]

Cryptic Dreams.

October 1, 2023 by Exangel

by Barry Vitcov. Before waking from a baseball game where the right fielder was an amoeba a limbless organism without arms playing a position requiring the best arms in a championship game doing the most harm. Or was I confused? Maybe it was a player named Joe Amoeba, or Mickey, or Willie, or Duke. What […]

Old Earth, New Testimony.

June 30, 2023 by Exangel

by Diana Morley.   Never thought quakes were useful beyond continents pulling up their hems and resettling into new more comfy positions, but turns out they’re not only dead giveaways of the earth’s mettle but also the metal ball at the true center. I imagine the interface between liquid core and the iron-nickel ball four-hundred […]

Recovery.

June 30, 2023 by Exangel

by Chris Farago. I count small memories as if they were lights on a string, alternating colors and years and differing quality of breath. At 6 I am alone in a room, somewhere. Again at 17, and also 12, not quite sure of the past or the future, then or ever. Today might be Tuesday, […]

If you’d like to come through now.

June 30, 2023 by Exangel

by Bernard Pearson. Like a librarian shooshing the ocean, It seemed so pointless some how That we should wish to see her now, Hair spread out like bracken, face chiselled, in quietude, As if for some ceremonial purpose. And her teeth on a washstand In a Tupperware container the kind You might put fish food […]

Inevitable Attraction is a Cliché.

June 30, 2023 by Exangel

by Barry Vitcov. Depending upon one’s point of view, our attraction was inevitable. Allow me to explain: I was at rest doing my best to conserve energy before you bumped into me. I swerved one way, you the other. At that point, it was all relative. We arced like independent rainbows seeking treasure beyond measure. […]

That cult classic pirate/sci fi mash up GREENBEARD, by Richard James Bentley, is now a rollicking audiobook, available from Audible.com. Narrated and acted by Colby Elliott of Last Word Audio, you’ll be overwhelmed by the riches and hilarity within.

“Captain Sylvestre de Greybagges is your typical seventeenth-century Cambridge-educated lawyer turned Caribbean pirate, as comfortable debating the virtues of William Shakespeare, Isaac Newton, and compound interest as he is wielding a cutlass, needling archrival Henry Morgan, and parsing rum-soaked gossip for his next target. When a pepper monger’s loose tongue lets out a rumor about a fleet loaded with silver, the Captain sets sail only to find himself in a close encounter of a very different kind.

After escaping with his sanity barely intact and his beard transformed an alarming bright green, Greybagges rallies The Ark de Triomphe crew for a revenge-fueled, thrill-a-minute adventure to the ends of the earth and beyond.

This frolicsome tale of skullduggery, jiggery-pokery, and chicanery upon Ye High Seas is brimming with hilarious puns, masterful historical allusions, and nonstop literary hijinks. Including sly references to Thomas Pynchon, Treasure Island, 1940s cinema, and notable historical figures, this mélange of delights will captivate readers with its rollicking adventure, rich descriptions of food and fashion, and learned asides into scientific, philosophical, and colonial history.”

Newport Public Library hosted a three part Zoom series on Visionary Fiction, led by Tod.

And we love them for it, too.

The first discussion was a lively blast. You can watch it here. The second, Looking Back to Look Forward can be seen here.

The third was the best of all. Visions of the Future, with a cast of characters including poets, audiobook artists, historians, Starhawk, and Mary Shelley. Among others. Link is here.

It launched May 10th, but for a limited time, you can listen for free with an Audible trial membership. So what are you waiting for? Start listening to the wonders of how Arcadia was born from the worst section of the worst neighborhood in the worst empire of all the worlds since the universe began.

If you love audio books, don’t miss the new release of REPORT TO MEGALOPOLIS, by Tod Davies, narrated by Colby Elliott of Last Word Audio. The tortured Aspern Grayling tries to rise above the truth of his own story, fighting with reality every step of the way, and Colby’s voice is the perfect match for our modern day Dr. Frankenstein.

Tod on the Importance of Visionary Fiction

Check out this video of “Beyond Utopia: The Importance of Fantasy,” Tod’s recent talk at the tenth World-Ecology Research Network Conference, June 2019, in San Francisco. She covers everything from Wind in the Willows to the work of Kim Stanley Robinson, with a look at The History of Arcadia along the way. As usual, she’s going on about how visionary fiction has an important place in the formation of a world we want and need to have.
