Fictional Characters Working Group April Minutes

April 13, 2008 by David Gordon

FICTIONAL CHARACTERS FOR REAL LIFE

SOCIAL CHANGE MEETING

April 1, 2008

PRESENT:   Tiger Lily [Peter Pan], Dorothy of Kansas [Wizard of Oz],  Bill the Cat [Bloom County], Dr. Manette [Tale of Two Cities], Prince Andrei [War and Peace], St. Christopher, Old Dog Tray, Foghorn Leghorn, Wendy Darling

ABSENT:      Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd

The meeting was called to order at 6 p.m. at the EAP World Headquarters Little Conference Room.  Biscuits and sherry were provided by EAP publisher Tod Davies.  Thank you, Tod.

BUDGET

Budget Committee at present is only Bill the Cat.  Bill pointed out that there was no budget.  Motion was made that this was a good thing.  Motion passed, 8 to 1, Foghorn Leghorn disagreeing.  “Ah want it in the record, a budget is always a good thing!”  Wendy added that this way was simpler – at least as long as EAP provides the biscuits and sherry.

MINUTES

As this is the first official meeting, unanimous vote that these be the first official minutes.

TREASURER'S REPORT

Bill the Cat (temporary Treasurer) distributed budget sheets reporting no money in treasury.  Foghorn Leghorn objected.  Everyone else seemed pleased.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

Wendy stated that the most important point of business is to begin immediate work on changing stories of Western culture from ones based on hierarchy and domination to ones based on equity and partnership.  Dr. Manette asked what kind of stories Wendy meant.  Chairman Wendy responded she thought it best to stick to the Committee’s core expertise:  legends, folk tales, fairy tales, children’s stories, cartoons, comics and adult fiction.  Foghorn Leghorn stated an objection:  “Ah LAHK hierarchy and domination.”  On vote, his position lost, 8 to 1.  Prince Andrei commented that, as fictional characters, we are the best suited to join forces to move forward in effecting such an important change.  Wonder Woman moved that next meeting should focus on practical suggestions for how to change stories, as well as on which stories needed changing most urgently.  Tiger Lily seconded.  Passed 8 to 1, Foghorn Leghorn objecting that the Group should first form a committee to explore the possibility of moving forward.   When he said that, everyone just stared at him in silence before moving on to the next item on the agenda.

OTHER BUSINESS

Prince Andrei brought up the need for someone to join the group who is more expert in contemporary military matters than he, as the scene has changed since the Napoleonic wars.  Dr. Manette seconded.  Wendy said she would ask GI Joe if he would join the group.  After a brief but lively discussion as to whether or not an action figure can rightly be called a fictional character, all agreed with this plan.

Dorothy of Kansas (Secretary) moved that the group thank EAP publisher Tod Davies for the delicious sherry and biscuits.  Old Dog Tray seconded.  Motion passed 8 to 1.

NEXT MEETING

The next meeting will be 6 pm, 1 May, in the Little Conference Room.  Meeting was adjourned 6:45.  Prince Andrei congratulated the group on swift and efficient handling of business.  Group thanked Prince Andrei.  Foghorn Leghorn left in a huff.

But we know he'll be back.

Respectfully submitted,

Dorothy of Kansas
