In ancient times a rabbi went around saying, Where is it written
that we should be happy? In more recent times the Declaration
of Independence said happiness is something we have the right
to pursue. It says nothing about how or whether we can catch it.
So what’s with all these new age types thinking they got it coming–
like it’s some kind of inalienable right or something? Life and Liberty
are the only rights, the Declaration of Independence says. Happiness
we just got the right to chase. So go ahead already–chase.
But before you go, here’s a tip from old Yang Wan-li who said,
When I pursue happiness, I can never find it. Then suddenly
when I’m not looking it just appears.
