IN THIS ISSUE #17.

October 10, 2007 by David Gordon

IN THIS ISSUE #17.

Families.  Everybody's got 'em.  And then, there's the suspicion there might just be one big one after all…if we're paying attention…the question is:  are we?

a banner in India saying "Girls are Precious"

Some of us get it, and some of us just want to keep our pool heated to 82 degrees…CHRIS COLIN interviews POOL BOY TO THE FIRST FAMILY...Then there are the families we're born with and the families we make...ALICE NUTTER knows a lot about both: FRIENDS, FAMILY, SEX, and ARCHAEOLOGY...MAX VERNON puts together MAX'S MUSIC FAMILY: MORE SONG PICKS …Popular Culture Editor MIKE MADRID looks at Captain Marvel's little sister in THE MARVEL FAMILY...FLOYD RUDMIN advises on how OUR FAMILIES NEED TO HELP IRAQI FAMILIES:  REFUGEE RELIEF…and HARVEY LILLYWHITE is BATHING IN FAMILY …

We're looking at our own families…in two stories of Liverpool, SEAN WATKIN writes QUEERPOOL 4: FAMILY LIFE , while MAT CAPPER says WHILE WE'RE LIVING THE DREAMS WE HAD AS CHILDREN FADE AWAY.…meanwhile, elsewhere on the planet, LAUREN RANDOLPH tells the story of THREE SISTERS …TOD DAVIES writes a LETTER TO MY TEENAGE NEPHEW...and WALTER LOMAX talks a little bit about his own family being there for him after thirty eight long years in jail…while CLARINDA HARRISS pens a MEMO TO THE CHILDREN. ..

Then there's how families see themselves.  We've got four members of the same family talking, and you'd never believe they're all talking about the same thing.  It's our RASHOMON MEETS THE SIMPSONS feature…first up, daughter REBECCA HARRISON with RAMBLINGS OF A CONFUSED TEENAGER 2:  MY DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY … then dad writes about the day Rebecca was born…HARVEY HARRISON with DIARY OF A DAD. ..and just when you think you know where you are, son DAVID HARRISON tells us MY DAD (IS NUTS BUT I LOVE HIM STILL) … thank goodness mom JEANNE HARRISON is around to say SO LIGHTEN UP ...read them in that order and be surprised…but why, come to think of it, should we be surprised that we all see things in such a different way?

The dad of the above family is EAP's new Philosophy Editor, HARVEY HARRISON , and he keeps stubbornly insisting the point of philosophy is to figure out what makes a better world in SEVEN PRISON DOORS:  APPLIED PHILOSOPHY … as if that weren't enough, he also introduces our new digital shorts feature BURNING SHORTS where he thoughtfully finds the best of the Internet shorts so that you don't have to…have a close look at both, and by the way, if you know what would make your life better,  email Harvey H with that info immediately…

THIS MONTH’S EDITORIAL figures once again that we're all in the same boat…

THE RED CAMP is back, with Rita La Chiva in love…sort of….And in the final chapter of  SNOTTY SAVES THE DAY everything's changed…which just goes to show what can happen if you figure out who you really are…

The Todblog wonders about celebrity, fame, domination, and journalists who (thank God) stubbornly insist they're a part of that world that ought to be better….JAM TODAY is bullish on autumn…. And FOGHORN LEGHORN JOINS ASK WENDY.   Yeah, it shocked her, too. Who knew he read EAP?

This month’s photograph is by Mike Madrid.  Thanks, Mike.
