Our Books.

August 24, 2009 by David Gordon

IN AN INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORE NEAR YOU (if there is one, and if there isn't, why not consider opening one with a coffee bar attached, we'll all come by…):

OUR MAY 2012 BOOK:

As Brian Griffith charts the stories of China’s founding mothers, shamanesses, goddesses, and ordinary heroines, he also explores the largely untold story of women’s contributions to cultural life in the world’s biggest society. Like Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s Half the Sky, this book provides inspiration for all global citizens.

A GALAXY OF IMMORTAL WOMEN: The Yin Side of Chinese Civilization, by Brian Griffith

a gathering of goddess images by Paul Mavrides

“This is a very ambitious and timely book, a book that many historians, literary theorists and story tellers who care about China and its “Other Half of the Sky” want to write, but Brian Griffith did it first, with such scope, ease and fun.”  —WANG PING, author of The Last Communist Virgin and Aching for Beauty: Footbinding in China

“This book is a most engaging and entertaining read, and the depth of its scholarship is astounding. Griffith vividly describes the counterculture of Chinese goddesses, shows that their fascinating stories are alive and active today, and points us toward a more inclusive and caring partnership future.”            —RIANE EISLER, author of The Real Wealth of Nations: Creating a Caring Economics and The Chalice and the Blade: Our History, Our Future

OUR  SEPTEMBER 2011 BOOK:

When David Marin fell in love with three abandoned children desperately in need of a home, there was only one thing he could do. Give up his relatively carefree life and learn how to become a parent. In the process, he found the future he had always wanted, but he also learned some hard lessons about single-parent adoption, the Kafkaesque side of Social Services, and America's anti-immigrant sentiment. Heartbreaking, funny, and inspiring, This Is US chronicles Marin’s quest to create a better life for these children—and for himself.

THIS IS US: THE NEW ALL-AMERICAN FAMILY, by David Marin

“In the interest of full disclosure, I should tell you that I fell in love with David Marin, the human being, when I heard about his book. A single guy adopting three little Mexican-American kids! Then, I started reading This Is US and I fell in love with David Marin, the writer. This guy can make the craziness of a bureaucracy funny; he can turn a trip to McDonald’s into an absorbing read; and mostly he can stir your heart by describing the life of his new All-American family . . .  The love is palpable; the prose throbs with life; the insights sparkle.”
—JULIA ALVAREZ, author of How the García Girls Lost Their Accents, In the Time of the Butterflies, Return to Sender, and Once Upon a Quinceañera: Coming of Age in the USA

“Inspiration is a word used too freely and too frequently. Yet, David Marin’s honesty and humanity in telling the story of how he became a father against the odds is just that, an inspiration in the truest sense. His story fills the world with the breath of hope.”
—JACQUELYN MITCHARD, author of The Deep End of the Ocean and Second Nature: A Love Story

“David Marin opens our eyes to the profound significance men make in the lives of children. If every man could understand the heart-warming and life-changing truths David so personally reveals in This is US, America would be a stronger country.”
—MEG MEEKER, M.D., bestselling author of Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters: Ten Secrets Every Father Should Know

AND OUR MAY 2011 RELEASE:

A manuscript is found under an old fir tree after a snowstorm. With it, a mysterious message from scientists in another world, explaining their analysis of this particular Arcadian fairy tale — the one about Snotty, a streetwise adolescent mastermind transported to a mystical realm where the fate of the world rests on discovering who he really is. As Snotty’s perceptions of might and right are upended, the scientist’s annotations point toward a deeper truth— that in the endless fight against evil, the toughest warriors come from the most despised group of all: the smallest, the poorest, the funniest, the snottiest. And possibly the greatest secret of all— that the laws of the universe can be found in fairy tales.

EAP published three books in 2009: Jam Today: A Diary of Cooking With What You've Got, by Tod Davies, a cookbook that argues that nourishing yourself and your loved ones is an act that can change the world; Mike Madrid's The Supergirls: Fashion, Feminism, and the History of Comic Book Heroines, an analysis of superheroines in American comics, and Correcting Jesus: 2000 Years of Changing the Story, by Brian Griffith, a history of how the story of Christianity was formed and for what purposes it's been used.

All of these seemingly disparate subjects are joined by a common theme: all are a challenge to the dominant cultural story, which tells us that hierarchy and domination are both desirable and inevitable.  And all have been developed through the bi-monthly EAP online magazine.
