SUCCUMB TO

December 11, 2007 by David Gordon

Stephanie Nilles performing
"Succumb To"
lyrics by Stephanie Nilles

I am the daughter of no influential figure
I am the product of no predictable circumstance
So stop pretending that you know what I’m here for
Because I’ve never been less hell-bent on joining your
little circus act

I will not succumb to the hum of lipstick feminism
In fact, I will not succumb to any one
overly-simplified decree
And besides, what fun would that be?
When all the world’s truths are just lying there
Are just waiting

Republicans are just Democrats made queasy ‘round talk
of abortion
And the Democrats are subsequently confused
And the activists are out there pinning the blame on
the next guy
It’s greatest farce of a collective collectivist
excuse

And the biggest, in all of his guilt, had the
brilliant idea
To set up a foundation down my street
Because it takes a real politician to operate out of
Harlem
Much like it takes a real man to wear pink

And in light of the fact that this is the best we’ve
got
She’s begun to come undone
So maybe the best we can do is just to suck it up
And take all the money and
Run

I know you’re good, at least superficially
But I’m not sure that you’re not just a little bit
crazy
So I will not forfeit the creativity I’ve always known
naturally
I am an orbit that’s always expanding

Because there’s a tension in the air here, like the
streets await work with bated breath
And the kids out in the playground there got their
basketballs full of crystal meth
And if you don’t write it down now
You’re gonna forget it
You’re gonna forget why

The line between instinct and truth
Is a fine line
And that line has become less and less defined
