Triggers.

December 31, 2018 by Exangel

by Benjamin White.

Triggers.

                                    All the senses are triggers,

Recalling the past
To let emotions resurface
And subsist on thoughts,

And the consciousness
Of nostalgic possibilities
Lost and gone
Sinking in the depths
Of time trying to –
Wanting to –

Enrich the experiences
That experienced enrichment –

Embraced,
Even as they drown.

Without memory
There can be no love,

So Trixie is blessed
To have forgotten.

The Eye of the Storm.

December 31, 2018 by Exangel

by Rose Jermusyk. A storm did rage upon the earth, it could not calm its winds. It wondered, wandering near and far, how it might find some peace. It spied a traveler further on, arriving with each step. It followed after for a time before it queried forth: “Be still, be still, and hear my […]

Trigger-Unhappy.

December 31, 2018 by Exangel

by David D. Horowitz. “You’re so judgmental,” the young woman vented into her cell phone to a male voice I barely heard, as she handed me my spinach fettuccini, neatly packed in a small recyclable plastic container. She took my credit card, processed the $6 payment, and handed the card back to me. “Yes, you […]

The Dictator Confronted by the Magus.

December 31, 2018 by Exangel

by Ron Singer. “How the hell did you get in here?” The Dictator groped for the buzzer beneath his desk, almost pressing the red nuclear button, instead.             “”Don’t bother,’ said the intruder, a tall man dressed in the gray hooded robe of a Dominican friar. ”It isn’t working. Besides, I’m not here to harm […]

For Those That Have No Existence.

December 27, 2018 by Exangel

by Ronnie Pontiac and Tamra Lucid. In 1312 A.D. Vestilius Corinthius wrote his list of forbidden words. Lists of forbidden words have existed since the beginning of human society but they have mostly been limited to treason, slander, and profanity. Vestilius examined the Latin lexicon for what he called Semina Periculo, in English “dangerous seeds.” […]

A Perfect Stump.

December 27, 2018 by Exangel

by Brendan Hamilton. A collage of text fragments from The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion (1861-65) I. A conoidal ball entered. II. A peculiar ‘leaden’ feeling had been observed. Complains of difficulty of speaking. Portions of bones received without history. A fatality of 45.9 percent. Meagre details are reported. III. […]

Kitchen Truths.

December 27, 2018 by Exangel

by Marie Davis and Margaret Hultz. “Mom said she never gave birth to me, that I came right out of the middle of a lime. She was busy making sliced turkey smothered in brown mole for the Sunday dinner — fifteen aunts, uncles, cousins – my grandparents were alive then – you know. Anyway, Mom […]

What Did You Put in Our Garage?

September 1, 2018 by Exangel

by Darren Payne. Tom eyed Margot over the top of his book. While in Moab that morning, Margot had picked up the Denver Post. Now she sat across the room from Tom, reading the real estate pages. He could see miniature images of houses reflected in her glasses. He knew it would only be a […]

East Germany.

September 1, 2018 by Exangel

by Benjamin White. I was in Europe To defend the West From godless communists Preparing to storm out Of their red politics And cross over bordered history To claim a Soviet future. She was born In East Germany and knew The policies and practices there Would not hesitate To operate and relieve her Of her […]

Eden.

September 1, 2018 by Exangel

by Robert Johnson. My old man was a piece of work. “Certifiable,” as the shrinks say on TV. He sat in that godforsaken attic “office” of his most of the years I was growing up at home, banging out his “tales” on an old portable typewriter, and—truthfully—I think he sold, what . . . two […]

That cult classic pirate/sci fi mash up GREENBEARD, by Richard James Bentley, is now a rollicking audiobook, available from Audible.com. Narrated and acted by Colby Elliott of Last Word Audio, you’ll be overwhelmed by the riches and hilarity within.

“Captain Sylvestre de Greybagges is your typical seventeenth-century Cambridge-educated lawyer turned Caribbean pirate, as comfortable debating the virtues of William Shakespeare, Isaac Newton, and compound interest as he is wielding a cutlass, needling archrival Henry Morgan, and parsing rum-soaked gossip for his next target. When a pepper monger’s loose tongue lets out a rumor about a fleet loaded with silver, the Captain sets sail only to find himself in a close encounter of a very different kind.

After escaping with his sanity barely intact and his beard transformed an alarming bright green, Greybagges rallies The Ark de Triomphe crew for a revenge-fueled, thrill-a-minute adventure to the ends of the earth and beyond.

This frolicsome tale of skullduggery, jiggery-pokery, and chicanery upon Ye High Seas is brimming with hilarious puns, masterful historical allusions, and nonstop literary hijinks. Including sly references to Thomas Pynchon, Treasure Island, 1940s cinema, and notable historical figures, this mélange of delights will captivate readers with its rollicking adventure, rich descriptions of food and fashion, and learned asides into scientific, philosophical, and colonial history.”

Newport Public Library hosted a three part Zoom series on Visionary Fiction, led by Tod.

And we love them for it, too.

The first discussion was a lively blast. You can watch it here. The second, Looking Back to Look Forward can be seen here.

The third was the best of all. Visions of the Future, with a cast of characters including poets, audiobook artists, historians, Starhawk, and Mary Shelley. Among others. Link is here.

Tod on the Importance of Visionary Fiction

Check out this video of “Beyond Utopia: The Importance of Fantasy,” Tod’s recent talk at the tenth World-Ecology Research Network Conference, June 2019, in San Francisco. She covers everything from Wind in the Willows to the work of Kim Stanley Robinson, with a look at The History of Arcadia along the way. As usual, she’s going on about how visionary fiction has an important place in the formation of a world we want and need to have.
